WVU Marching Band director returning to his roots

With respect to novelist Thomas Wolfe, John Hendricks contends you can go home again.

The Shepherdstown native and director of the West Virginia University Mountaineer Marching Band will do just that when he directs the band???s drum line in performances Oct. 28 at Jefferson High School ??? his alma mater ??? as part of WVU Days in the Eastern Panhandle.

???It???s always a pleasure to return to my roots, and I do so every chance I get,??? Hendricks said. ???Being able to visit my high school alma mater directing such a dedicated group of musicians as members of the Mountaineer Marching Band makes the trip even more enjoyable.???

In addition to the concert at Jefferson High, the drum line will also perform at Martinsburg High School. Both performances will also feature the WVU Jazz Ensembles under the direction of Paul Scea.

???It will be fun, and we think the students will enjoy it,??? Hendricks said.

After graduating from Jefferson High School, Hendricks obtained his bachelor???s and master???s degrees in music from WVU. He also played in the band from 1979-82.

He became associate director of bands at WVU and the ???Pride of West Virginia???s??? 10 th director in 1998 after serving as assistant director for five years. He also directs the Concert Band and assists the Wind Symphony.

In 2003, Hendricks was named West Virginia Band Director of the Year by the West Virginia Chapter of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster???s Fraternity.

Before coming to WVU, he ser ved as a band director in public schools in West Virginia and at Rutgers University.
