WVU Band will make trip to Louisville

The Mountaineer Marching Band's trip to the Nov. 2 WVU-Louisville game is still on, according to West Virginia University officials, despite notice Tuesday (Oct. 24) from University of Louisville band and administrative officials that no time was available for "The Pride" to perform at pre-game or halftime.

"After discussions today with our athletic and administrative officials we have decided that the Band's participation - at pre-game alumni functions and in the stands during the game - is the right thing to do," said WVU Band Director Jay Drury.

"We've had this trip planned for some months now, and it not only included performing for our team and fans at Thursday night's game, but also included stops in Parkersburg and Charleston to perform at a high school game and a band spectacular.

"So, while we are disappointed not to be able to perform on the field in Louisville, we will play proudly in the stands and at the pre-game alumni event near the stadium," Drury said.

He added, "We ask that our many supporters, who have been so generous already this year in our drive for new uniforms and in their support for the Band, direct your enthusiasm toward supporting the team - just as you've done all year."

WVU officials echoed Drury's sentiments, saying, "Certainly, this is becoming a great Big East rivalry, and we want the focus to remain on the field," said Becky Lofstead, director of News and Information Services. "We're pleased that our Band will still be making this trip and adding to the excitement and atmosphere of what I'm sure will be a great college football game between two nationally-ranked teams."

The pre-game WVU Alumni Association tailgate is being held from 5-7 p.m. at the Cardinal Inn, 2799 South Floyd St., Louisville, Ky., directly across from Papa John's Stadium. A portion of the band will perform sometime during the event.

Those interested in attending the full function should RSVP to gregg.cave@mail.wvu.edu or call 293-4731 ext. 17 by this Friday.

The band will also perform post-game at Friday's (Nov. 3) 7:30 p.m. high school football game between Parkersburg South and Nitro, and after an overnight stay in area homes, travel to Charleston Saturday (Nov. 4) to perform at the Tournament of Bands/Chapter 8 Championships at approximately 4:30 p.m. at Laidley Field.
